Personally, I grew up with the original trilogy: A New Hope (1977), The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983). No saga is perfect, but it still thrills me years later.
Later, I discovered the prequels: The Phantom Menace (1999), Attack of the Clones (2002) and Revenge of the Sith (2005). The atmosphere is different from the original trilogy, but the whole is coherent and tells a story that feeds the Star Wars universe .
Finally, I saw the postlogy: The Force Awakens (2015), The Last Jedi (2017) and The Rise of Skywalker (2019).
I think I can say that it is the most disappointing in the entire Star Wars saga because the films do not tell anything exceptional and they are poorly constructed, poorly developed…
In short, they give the impression of witnessing the fall of a monument with fragile foundations!
Rey is a character that could have been interesting, but she is not since she is already much too powerful from The Force Awakens ! Consequently, she has no room for progression or evolution… From this first film, she manipulates a stormtrooper – Daniel Craig’s cameo -, she already fights correctly with a lightsaber while she has received no training, she only has to think of the Force to deploy her potential, instead of being an unknown in this universe we end up learning that her name is Rey Palpatine… In short, it’s a video game that we start with the codes that give us all the powers from level 1!
Supreme Leader Snoke! A bellows that deflates like a balloon! We discover him in The Force Awakens surrounded by mysteries that pique curiosity: who is he? where does he come from? how will he evolve? how powerful is he? etc. Finally, the films tell us: “Go f*** yourself!” since he dies in The Last Jedi so that we learn in The Rise of Skywalker that he was only a clone created by Palpatine! Trilogy, you really made fun of me! Dare to say otherwise!
Since I’m talking about Emperor Palpatine, I have a question: why bring back one of the most important villains of the saga as if it were just an anecdotal event? Indeed, we learn of his return in the introduction of Star Wars IX : “By the power of the storyline, I summon Palpatine!” Why so much hate? Why this middle finger raised in the face of fans and others? It’s the Palpatine surprise package…
To begin this new trilogy, The Force Awakens announces: “Now, it’s the First Order! Your b***h, it’s magic!” Where did he come from? In Return of the Jedi , we left this universe which was heading towards peace and the fall of the Empire! Why has no one taken the time to tell us about the advent of this First Order?
The events of The Force Awakens take place 30 years after Return of the Jedi and in 30 years Luke Skywalker, hero of the rebellion, becomes a legend in the eyes of the new characters? No… Seriously? It’s as absurd as claiming that Daniel Balavoine is a legend and that we doubt that he ever existed! Not to mention the fact that Luke throws the lightsaber that Rey brings him – The Last Jedi – to tell her roughly in The Rise of Skywalker : “Be careful, take care of your lightsaber!”. No, but it’s certain: dwelling on the coherence of what we create is overrated!
Finn could have been more interesting, but he is a failure like most of the characters in this new trilogy. He becomes a hero of the rebellion between The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi while we know that the two films are not separated by years, but by just a few seconds since we pick up VIII where VII left off: Rey handing a lightsaber to Luke.
In short, I do not intend to write an exhaustive answer because it would take me days, but I do not understand at all the logic of this trilogy which, from my point of view, tells nothing.
This is all the more disappointing since Star Wars has a very rich extended universe that has been established for years, from which the writers could have drawn inspiration to tell new stories, but no…
Fortunately, The Mandalorian and the Star Wars animated series are of good quality, not to mention the novels and comics which expand this universe without making it total chaos!
